Pshaw

Y’all Wordle?  If so, then you know what this week’s topic is going to cover.

Pshaw, the rest of you who don’t Wordle say.  Whatever do you mean?

Usually, most Wordle words are normal words most people use and are familiar with.  Words like PUTTY, ORBIT, DIVER, CHURN, BOOTH.

These were some of the words from this past week.

Sometimes, they throw in words that are words most are familiar with but maybe not as typical or used much.  LORRY, SHILL, ALOHA, SCRUM, DEITY.

But never, in as long as there has been Wordle (one lovely consequence of Covid quarantine time), have they used a word that sent we Wordlers google searching to see if that was even a word.

Turns out, it is.

It’s defined by the dictionary as a traditional English interjection used to show disbelief, impatience, disgust, or mild contempt.

As in:

“They cancelled the healthcare credit and my healthcare costs quadrupled? Pshaw! What were they thinking?”

“They fired all the scientists and eliminated a lot of the food disease tracking and now we have the Summer of Cyclospora? Pshaw! What are they doing?”

“What? No season 2 of The Burroughs? Pshaw! Who made that bad call?”

Now, it’s not to say that most of us weren’t familiar with the term “pshaw” or its meaning.  Just that we thought that that was just an expression, not an actual word listed in the dictionary.

You know, expressions, like “sheesh”.

Oh, wait. What? That’s a word too? Also, in the dictionary?

Ok, how about expressions, like, “argh”.

Oh, wait. What? That’s a word too? Also, in the dictionary?

Ok, how about expressions, like, “grrr’.

Oh, wait. What? That’s a word, too? Also in the dictionary?

I don’t know what’s up with all this jawn.

Just glad that none of these other expressions are 5 letters long.
