Spring?

Ah, Spring.  Somewhere along the line she has pulled a fast one on us.  She may go by the name of Spring, but really, I think that’s just her first name.  I think her full name is Spring Winter Summer.  Because she really cannot make up her mind what season she wants to be.  Some may call her fickle.  I call her crazy.

Used to be that Spring was this lovely period where Winter gave way to more sunshine, warmer temps, and nature returning to bloom.  Temperatures were moderate.  There were sayings like: March, in like a lion and out like a lamb.  And April showers bring May flowers. It was the reprieve in between the cold of Winter and the swelter of Summer.

But now? It’s like Spring has suffered some kind of mental breakdown.  She’s gone a bit bipolar on us.  One day we have a glorious, true Spring day.  The sun is shining, it’s 70 degrees out, you don’t even need a jacket.  You might almost mistake yourself for being in Southern California.

And then the next day? I mean, the very next day? Break out your parka because the temperature dropped 30 degrees overnight.

Here’s what the temperature was in the Philadelphia area for the first ten days of April:

84, 58, 71, 84, 73, 59, 56, 55, 61, 71

Do you have whiplash yet?  Trouble trying to figure out what to wear? Shorts? Pants? Sweater? T-shirt?  Doesn’t matter.  Whatever you pick, it will be wrong.  Sometimes, you have to start the day in pants and a sweater, but finish the day in shorts and a t-shirt. And vice-versa.

And those are just the high temperatures.  On Saturday, April 4th when the high was 84, the low was 48.  And on the 8th when the high was 55, the low was 31.  Yes, 31. Below freezing.

And that my friends, is criminal.  Nothing worse than seeing a beautiful Magnolia tree in full bloom one day, turned to brown mush the next.

It’s not going to get any better.  Here’s the forecast for the next 14 days:

65, 80, 86, 88, 88, 83, 85, 78, 65, 67, 74, 79, 64, 63

Someone needs to have a talk with Spring.  Let her know it’s ok to just be Spring. Assure her that she can say goodbye to Winter and wait 3 months to say hello to Summer.

Meanwhile, for this week, we’ll be breaking out the kiddie pool.  But we’ve got our parkas handy just in case.
